  • Letter to PM Boris Johnson- Removal of the status of Nepal as a Covid-19 ‘red list’ country 27.09.2021

Following the announcement that eight countries would be removed from the UK’s travel red list on 17th September – but not Nepal — there has been shock and utter disbelief in Nepal, amongst the UK’s Nepali diaspora, and among the UK-based community of people with an interest in the country, that Nepal has been left as the only nation in South Asia on the red list. The executive committee of the Britain-Nepal Academic Council shares these concerns, and urges the UK government to take urgent action to revise this status.

The executive committee of the Britain-Nepal Academic Council urges the UK government to take urgent action to support the government of Nepal in the face of the humanitarian crisis which is unfolding in Nepal due to the devastating second wave of COVID-19 in South Asia.

We write in the wake of the unprecedented yet urgent call for international support issued by the Prime Minister of Nepal, KP Sharma Oli, published in the Guardian on the 10th May [https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/may/10/nepal-covid-uk-g7] and following our own round-table discussion today on the situation in Nepal involving prominent experts on public health in Nepal and the UK (https://www.bnac.ac.uk/activities/covid-19-nepal/). During our programme Sir Jeremy Farrar, the Director of the Wellcome Trust, described the current situation in Nepal as ‘beyond frightening’.
